My Students

My students are bright and caring children. They love to work together and learn in active ways! Our school is arts-integrated, which means we teach academic concepts and standards through the arts including drama, visual arts, creative movement, and creative writing. We teach and foster collaboration as a key cornerstone of our curriculum. Because of this collaboration, we practice inclusion for students with special needs. I also teach students who are learning English as their second language.

Our students learn how to work as a group through the creative process.

They take pride in their work and love to celebrate each other's accomplishments. Our school is such a positive environment!

My Project

My students love to learn through the arts, especially performing arts! Each year my students get 8 sessions with a professional dance teacher as she leads them through dance while teaching science concepts, like life cycles. While listening to instrumental music, they dance through being a seed, a sprout, growing leaves, a flower, a fruit, and then returning back to the earth as compost. Dancing these steps helps students experience the process and cement the learning in their minds. It is truly active, interactive, and engaging!

I would like to expand and build upon this important work in the classroom.

In order to do that, I need an iPod to store music, a hand drum to help students hear and find a steady beat, and rhythm scarves for students to dance and explore. I currently have classroom music stored on my computer, which is not always conducive to different areas. If I had it on an iPod, we could take our dance class outside or to another area of the school with a bluetooth speaker. I could also walk around the room, holding the iPod and easily change the song without having to run back to the computer. It will help me facilitate the dance class so much easier than the set up I currently have.

I know my students will have so much fun performing and learning, all at the same time!
