My Students

I am an 11th grade science teacher who teaches Chemistry and Living Environment (Biology). I teach four classes, two chemistry and two biology. The calculators will help me integrate math and science.

My students are from the inner city of Brooklyn.

There is a large range of skills, personalities and cultures. My classes range from 25 to 32 students of mixed abilities and social-emotional maturities. Our school is a small ISA school with a focus on the media and arts and how both can create community. We are relatively new (8-years old), so are always forming and reforming new ideas in order to help our students achieve greatness.

My Project

How can you really teach science without math? It is impossible. Science is the application of math. In science, geometric principles such as symmetry, reflection, shape, and structure reach down to the atomic levels. In science, algebraic balance is required in chemical formulas, growth ratios, and genetic matrices. In science, math is used to analyze nature, discover its secrets and explain its existence and this is the big problem. The biggest uses of mathematics in science is data gathering and analysis. Students in my class will learn how to apply mathematical principles to scientific applications and theories.

The calculators will give me the ability to apply Common Core Mathematics in my classroom.

This will make my student career and college readiness and mathematically literate. Giving students a real science problem to solve - one that requires math tools, I'm giving my students a reason to use math. Math then becomes something useful, not something to dreaded.
