My Students

For our diverse population of 8th grade students, a typical day in our classroom involves small group work, and many discussions. In our classroom, my co-teacher and I like to keep Math interesting and fun. We like to expose our students to various content within our math classroom.

Our school's theme is "Eyes On Excellence." We want our students to always aim for excellence, which is why we expose them to much more than just math.

For example, we recently researched the planets in our solar system and converted measurements from standard form into scientific notation. We have an eager group of students who enjoy learning, but come from very different backgrounds, with varied learning styles. As teachers, this means that we need to diversify our teaching resources and materials that we bring into our classroom.

My Project

I am requesting 32 subscriptions of Scholastic Math magazines to integrate Literacy into our Math classroom. With a class subscription of Scholastic Math, our students will integrate Literacy and Math in a fun and exciting way! They will have the opportunity to see how math can be used in their daily lives, connect math to current events and read articles on high interest subjects. Students will gain exposure to math in so many different ways. This magazine subscription will also be an especially effective tool for our students who are visual learners.

This project will help improve our classroom in many ways.

It will allow our students the opportunity to be exposed to math through a different lens. This magazine will open up many different discussions in our classroom, enhancing our students' critical thinking and communication skills. We want to help our students to be able to make connections among various content areas and to their own lives.
