My Students

I am going to have the best time teaching chemistry next year in a small school dedicated to visual and preforming arts. I am already brainstorming how I can integrate art into my units on Chemistry.

I teach in a very high poverty area where most students will be the first in their families to graduate from high school.

However, this only motivates them further for success! High school chemistry is one of the toughest obstacles many face - and incorporating something the students love, art, will surely help captivate their attention and show them how chemistry is meaningful in their lives.

My Project

I am requesting two types of clay (air dry and oven dry) and paper mache. Students will use the clay to learn about the properties of mixtures and the chemical composition of clay. We will also discuss the chemical differences between air dry and oven dried clay. The paper mache with be used during our chemical bonding unit to create models of the various chemical compounds we study. Both will help my kinesthetic learners become more engaged in my lessons and activities.

Please consider bringing art into my chemistry classroom and help me show my students how chemistry is related to their everyday lives!

With your help, my small school of budding artists will learn how to connect my subject to a topic they already know and love!
