We are a small Title I inner city school in Boston, MA that works hard to bring quality education to our incredibly diverse community. Our student body is made up of 99% minority families, 86% of which have been identified as high-needs due to being English language learners, students with disabilities, or economically disadvantaged.
One of the challenges of providing music education in this context is being able to engage and excite students despite real-world traumas that our students face on a daily basis, coupled with a lack of resources with which to adequately support them.
We are lucky to have access to some technology, including the Quaver curriculum, which allows us flexibility in providing students with interactive activities and multiple points of entry for students with special needs. However, even though we have a strong curriculum and a dedicated staff, our students have little to no opportunity to deeply explore musical instruments—a fundamental component of developing musicianship.
Our students are talented, unique, and extraordinarily varied in their backgrounds and skill sets. Their, and my, appreciation of these otherwise inaccessible resources, would be profoundly special.
Help our students receive instruction on playing musical instruments for the first time!
These ukuleles would be an invaluable gateway to engaging our students in music education, With your help, students will be able to perform on instruments instead of just learning their names and watching video clips of performers.
Our curriculum, Quaver, already has some amazing interactive ukulele resources including playalongs, printables, and flexible instructional structures that will scaffold student learning as they explore the instrument. By using this curriculum as our anchor, we will be able to continue learning musical skills through the ukulele for multiple years of instruction. For many of our students, this will be the only opportunity they have to play an instrument until adulthood since music is not compulsory in our secondary schools.
We are ready and excited to take the next step forward in developing musicianship! Will you help us get there?
