I teach 7th and 8th grade mathematics as an inclusion special education teacher at East St. John Elementary in La Place, LA. My school is a Title I public school, 90% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and of course, many of my students are recovering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Regardless, ESJE is a fun place to be, and the middle school faculty ensures that school is not only a productive but a happy place for students! As a teacher of students with special needs, I am well aware that they depend not only on careful guidance and patience to learn, but also a variety of multi-modal activities and opportunities to access the material. From my experience, it is imperative to connect their learning to any relevant real world knowledge they may have! Any connection, from shopping at a gas station and buying clothes, to divvying up a pizza and planning a meal, helps ensure they learn just a little bit better. I am sure my students associate instructional videos with historical documentaries in social studies class, or cell processes in science, but rarely do they have the chance to access interesting visual material to learn math. For this reason, I am requesting to buy a set of 10 videos in the "Math All Around Us" series as well as the "Why Study Math" video from the School Specialty catalog. These videos range in topic from "Awesome Arithmetic"--where they plant and harvest this season's crops in an imaginary vegetable farm--to "Graph Attack" for more advanced pre-algebra, where they will definitely benefit from the videos! Of course, since I teach in an inclusion setting, all students regular or special ed will have access to these videos. Optimally, all students as well as those special ed students for whom the materials will be especially beneficial will be required to complete supplementary work that will enhance their understanding of the video. All in all, I teach approximately 130 7th and 8th graders, and my regular education co-teacher would be able to use the videos for her regular education math classes as well, numbering an extra 90 pupils! The addition of these videos would provide much needed visual accompaniment to our classroom. Thank you!
