My Students

Do you remember when you weren't sure what you wanted to be when you grew up? When the possibilities were endless? The first years of school should be a time of learning new ideas, instilling a love of learning, and setting a solid foundation of basic skills.

Kindergarten today is much more academic than what you may remember from your own school days.

The youngest students in the class are often at a disadvantage as they try to compete with peers who may be a full year older than them. I am excited to be teaching a transitional kindergarten class this year, offering children with fall birthdays a developmentally appropriate curriculum aligned with kindergarten standards. For many of my students, this is their first experience with formal education. I have 23 students in my class, 20 boys and 3 girls. They are energetic, curious and so ready to learn. This year will lay the foundation to their future success in education. I want them to end the year with a love for school and learning, and ready to be leaders in their kindergarten class next year. My students are very diverse, both socio-economically and culturally. They are smart, sweet, and sometimes sassy. I love teaching this age group!

My Project

Role playing is a powerful way to learn about careers and try out what it might feel like to have an important role in your community. I am requesting a set of 10 costumes, including a firefighter, a doctor, a nurse, a police officer, a pilot, a construction worker, a chef, a mailman, an astronaut, and a mechanic. My students would gain so much knowledge of the community and language when we role play using these costumes. The play food will be very useful when they are role playing being a chef. It is a multicultural set of play food, including items like sushi and steamed dumplings, which will help us as we learn about different cultures. The two art easels will accommodate 6 students at once at our art station. Students can be creative while they develop small motor coordination and learn about color mixing and patterns at the art easels. Students will enjoy hands-on activities with gears and puzzles, helping to develop their hand-eye coordination.

Your donation will greatly enhance my students' enjoyment and retention of information as they learn about careers, cultures and art.

Please help me engage my students with costumes and hands-on activities that instill in them a love of learning during this crucial first year of formal education.
