My Students

I teach students in grades 3-5 in a special needs school for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Every child learns differently and requires different modalities for learning and expression of knowledge. Many of my students are visual learners, who enjoy learning with tools and materials that offer hands-on and tactile learning practice.

Every day, structure and differentiation plays a huge role in how lessons and activities have to be planned for the classroom.

My students learn best when they are engaged and feel ownership or independence in their learning. With different materials, my students will have the opportunity to learn concepts in differentiated ways which cater to their individual learning styles.

My Project

Having unique and innovative materials in the classroom will help to foster critical thinking, creativity and build communication and social skills in the art room.

When concepts in art-making are explored using unique and innovative materials such as a boogie board, Magna-Tiles or gel printmaking blocks, my students will be more engaged and exhibit more confidence and independence in their learning and craft.

Finally, the exposure to new materials I believe will also prepare my students for interaction with professional works of art in the real world. And most importantly, prepare them for ways of looking and interpreting ideas about images in the world around them, as they develop real world connections through art.
