My Students

We are teaching in an ever-changing world. Our students demand information, not in minutes, but in seconds. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) influences everything we do; how we entertain, how we communicate, how we live our daily lives, but what about education?

I am a high school Biology, AP Biology and Chemistry teacher from a large urban fringe school district where for many of my students, due to the economy, have limited opportunities to reach into this digital world.

Our school has a large percentage of students on free or reduced lunch and with that, funds are often short at home, as well as in the classroom. I want to be able to give my students the world, but I only have the resources to give them a slice of it.

This is where you come in! I believe that encouraging STEM education and bringing educational technology into our classrooms is a vital part of helping our students, both academically, socially, and in preparation for the world beyond high school.

My Project

I feel that we need to create opportunities for students to reach into the future and make science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) a vital part of our educational setting. We are no longer in an era of books and rote memorization.

Instead, our eyes have been opened to a variety of methods which ask us to engage students, creating moments that “spark” and make them want to go out and tell the world what they just learned.

My students yearn for these opportunities and I want to provide it to them. In our district, the use of technology is extremely limited, and to truly utilize these resources to the fullest extent, it takes funds and supplies that are beyond our means. In order to light my students’ fire of interest and capture teachable moments, it needs to start here.

With the use of these STEM-based educational products, such as the Ozobot, Ollie, Sphereo, Drone and Makey-Makey, we will be able to interact with STEM topics in new and innovative ways. We will be able to make connections when my students see topics truly come to life.

My students’ educational experience will compound with each and every use. I want my students to be able to graduate, able to carry with them, skills learned through new and innovative techniques that started with lessons and ideas from inspired by my class.
