My Students

One of the biggest challenges science and math teachers face can be finding a way to help all types of students become excited about learning and stay engaged in everyday lessons.

Every year I am faced with the challenge of showing my students that science and math classes can not only apply to their lives, but that they can also be fun.

As a 6th grade science and math teacher I often have students come to me with misconceptions about who or what a scientist is. Many do not see themselves in a STEM career and the thought that science can be exciting may not have crossed their minds, especially for my 6th grade girls. One of my goals is to break this misconception and show students that there are many areas of science that might interest them and that all types (and genders) of people can become scientists. Starting a robotics club will give my students exposure to a unique and exciting activity that will help foster this appreciation of science and equip them with the tools needed to be successful in a 21st Century world.

My Project

Starting a robotics club will give me a unique opportunity to work with students in a way that isn't always possible during the day. A robotics club will also allow students who may not normally sign up for a club an opportunity to come experience something new and exciting that may help inspire them in the future while providing year round opportunities for students to work and be part of something different. As we build and design our robots to complete various tasks, students will be engaged in multiple problem solving activities. These activities will not only require them to use knowledge they have gained in the classroom but also knowledge and skills attained in their everyday world.

Using our new Lego robotics kit will provide students with STEM activities they wouldn't otherwise experience.

A robotics unit will not only challenge students in everyday academic areas but also challenge students in areas such as problem solving, teamwork, and creative thinking. Finally, and maybe most importantly, robotics will help give students the confidence to succeed and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.
