Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of my goals for this year is to help my students build connections between reading, writing, and their lives. Far too often, I encounter students who disengage with school because they feel that it is not relevant to them. I want to start the year by building connections between school and life.

My students come from a diverse subsection of Manhattan.

Although over half of these students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, our school missed Title I funding by a mere half of a percentage point. Therefore, we have many disadvantaged students and very few funds to work with.

My Project

Blake's presentation would use hip hop as a communicative tool to help my students think about the relevance of reading and writing in their lives and inspire them to make positive choices. In October, I'll be kicking off a unit on myths and The Lightening Thief. The unit centers around what it means to be a hero, and it intersects well with central themes of Blake's presentations: taking ownership of our identities and turning problems into opportunities. As a kick-off into the unit, Blake would help bring real-life relevance to a unit that is steeped in fictional narrative. As we move through the unit, students will return to these thematic connections by making text to self and text to world connections in discussions and in writing.

In allowing Blake to speak at my school, my students will make connections between reading, writing, and their lives.

It would also encourage them to use academics as a vehicle to explore and develop their own identities. My hope is that this will inspire and empower them to make positive choices throughout their lives.
