My Students

My school is wonderful about encouraging and incorporating the arts in every classroom. We want our students to develop a love for the visual arts and be able to use their talents to stand out! We're upbeat and encourage that energy to maintain engaging lessons. We learn and review content as much as possible from bell to bell!

A typical day in my 5th and 6th grade art class greets me with the challenge of quickly engaging students to produce a work of art they are proud of while meeting state art mandates.

5th and 6th grade students are very energetic and love to socialize! If students are encouraged to make choices about the content and medium of their art, they may find the class more meaningful. That's where student choice centers come in! Allowing students choices in the content and medium of the art they produce will certainly increase their time on task and improve their finished product.

My Project

My favorite teacher would display several art activities for us to choose from as we entered the classroom. I quickly went to her display, made up my mind, and sat quietly at my seat for further instructions. My students have a very limited amount of time in my classroom - one day per week for fifty minutes. I need to be able to quickly gain their attention and keep them engaged from the very beginning to the very end of class.

I would love to provide my students with exciting and engaging projects that lead the choice-based art room.I have chosen materials that would address specific artistic behaviors: "Go-Fish" cards to learn about the Masters, "Step-by-step" drawing books to promote student confidence, and Zentangles to help students understand the relaxing benefits of art.

Other materials, such as Straws and Connectors and Legos might inspire those who are more "math-minded."

Two additional drawing games are included to help break the "I can't" attitude some students have about art and incorporate fun and humor into the subject. The items listed are essential to my choice-based classroom stations. These resources will greatly enhance my program and help students understand the many benefits of visual arts.
