My Students

I’ve been blessed with a teaching career surrounded by middle school students. Their energy and puppy-like awkwardness make for an exciting and interesting day that is always different from the next. In a sixth through eighth-grade middle school, my seventh-grade students are at a unique point in their academic career. They have a year of experience, yet another year still full of wonder, giving them the perfect mixture of confidence and curiosity.

As a seventh grade ELA teacher, my classroom is the melting pot of readers and writers.

My students come from different learning backgrounds and have many unique learning styles; however, they are all seeking adventure and looking to escape the ordinary day-to-day. My students are on the hunt for awesome ideas, friends, role models, and inspiration to make life (and school) fascinating!

My Project

There is something intriguing about novels in verse because they can get the most reluctant of readers to become the most avid of readers. Novels in verse are stories written in a poetic format, but still easy on the eyes and easy to comprehend. Plus, these stories are absolutely amazing and inspiring!

Novels in verse are wonderful for reluctant readers, but they also are wonderful for reluctant writers.

Novels in verse display a limitless way to write which motivates young writers to take risks with their writing. By exposing my students to multiple stories written in verse, I am hoping to inspire them to create their own unique stories and develop their own unique writing voice.

These books will remain in the classroom to be shared among all students for independent reading time. Excerpts will be taken from each book and shared with the class as a mentor text for writing. Students will see how writing does not need to be formulaic. Writing is expressive and can come in many forms, just like each individual student. Students will read these excerpts like a writer and take what they have learned and apply it to their own writing. If they happen to love the excerpt, then they can read the book!
