You can help provide necessary tools to ensure that my first-graders succeed in learning to read! I teach first grade in an extremely high-need community in New Mexico.

Several students in my class are struggling to learn to read. It is a chore for them to laboriously decode the words in our first-grade level texts. Some of the students are able to decode the simplest three-letter words in isolation, but have a hard time reading an entire sentence or book. They are not motivated to learn to read, whether it is because reading is not viewed as pleasurable in their homes, or because some of their parents are even illiterate.

I want to help my students WANT to learn to read. I believe I can increase their motivation by providing individual cassette players (so the students who are struggling the most can take these home at night in addition to using them during the school day) and many different choices of books on tape. Some of the books that I have selected are at very basic levels and others progress to more challenging stories. There are classic stories and characters that students love, such as Curious George, Biscuit, and Frog and Toad. The students will be able to listen and read along with books. They can take the book, tape player, and tape home in a book bag to practice reading after school. By experiencing the whole story without having to struggle to read each word students will begin to understand the joy of reading. Reading along with audio support will help my students increase their sight word knowledge and their comprehension, eventually empowering them to begin reading books on their own.

You can help my struggling readers by providing materials that allow them to practice reading at home, even if their parents are unable to read to them. Your help will ensure that all students in my classroom have access to enjoyable books with audio support that will motivate them and help them learn to read fluently.
