My Students

Reading is a joy for so many and a key to success in our student's futures. Our goal is to create life-long readers out of our students. The students are asked to read outside of school but many do not have the encouragement at home or discipline to create these habits.

Many students in our school go home to empty homes, babysitting of younger siblings, and very limited English spoken in the home.

They have little support and encouragement to read outside of school. Our high-needs school population is approximately 39% ELL and 73.4% free and reduced lunch.

My Project

We have found our students are motivated by incentives. Every year we create an all-school reading program in which students are rewarded for their reading outside of school. They love the competition, the rewards, and their love of reading has grown as they improve their reading skills. This year each student has a goal of 500 minutes of reading outside of school a month. When they reach their goal, they receive a sticker on a chart and a prize. Each class is recognized on the school bulletin board for the total minutes read monthly. Each class has a hot-air balloon that rises as their reading minutes increase. Goal: Hit the Ceiling! They are also earning tickets to a Reading Carnival with their reading minutes. The carnival will have all the exciting games, food, and prizes of a school carnival. The students are excited as many have never been to a carnival before. We are asking for help with monthly prizes as well as prizes for the carnival.

Many of our students have limited vocabularies, and reading will give depth to their understanding of experiences in their lives.

Life-long readers become life-long learners. We want every one of our students to fall in love with books. We know their lives will be much richer because of the adventures and knowledge reading will bring into their lives.
