Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our nation's children are dangerously at risk of losing out on a life-long love and command of reading. I teach 7th grade literacy and social studies (including a special education class) to students in a high-need community. Middle school is a time when learners either latch on to a love of reading or deepen their alienation from the wonders of the written word. My students need engaging, relevant books on their level so they can grow as readers (our class goal is to grow 2 years for the 70% of my students behind in reading) and spark a relationship with literature that will keep them reading for life.

My students need books that are engaging to African American and Latino youth with interest in plural identities. We are lacking these books in any useful quantities at our school. Many of my students love to read, but many need some support in finding reasons to love literature. I believe that enhancing our library and book club program with these titles will help my students reach their reading growth goals and develop longtime reading habits that will help them defeat the forces against them in academia.

My students need titles that are current, engaging and those that will allow for meaningful discussion. That is why I have requested Monster by Walter Dean Myers, The Skin I'm In by Sharon Flake, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie, The Misfits by James Howe, and Becoming Naomi Leon by Pam Munoz Ryan. These novels all relate to my students' multicultural teenage identities.

Some of my students admit to have never finishing a book before. This is not okay. You can help make underachievement in reading a thing of the past for my students. I believe these titles will kick off a successful book club program in my classroom that will allow my students to become the voracious and thoughtful readers we all know they need to become. Developing a life-long relationship with literature will not only help my students achieve academic success, but it will create opportunities for growth of character and mind so central to a culturally rich and socially benevolent society.
