This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
In my IB US History and History of the Americas classes, we cover the important topic of the Civil Rights movement in the USA as part of our Rights And Protest prescribed topic.
Memories, testimonies, and other first-hand accounts help to make history come alive, and John Lewis’ wonderful, intensely personal graphic novel memoir trilogy is an excellent one.
Reading this memoir (which is one of a variety of texts we will examine, of a mix of primary and secondary sources) will give my students the experience of reading a longer form of history - the personal memoir. It is an intensely personal insider’s view of this remarkable period in American history, as told by the late John Lewis.
Often we read excerpts and articles, but this story is so accessible and emotionally told. I think it is an ideal text for my students to explore in its full form.
