This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Using the STEM materials will give my students the opportunity to fall in love with science! They will use the resources and tools to become inspired to pursue careers in the sciences in the future.
These STEM kits propose an open-ended challenge for the students.
They must follow the directions, as on the building brick kit, in order to complete the challenge. This works on their engineering skills, while assisting their functional reading skills at the same time. They must be able to read the direction cards, like in the STEM Bundle activities, in order to know what materials they need and any other key pieces of information.
Students will work on the following standards from the NextGen Science Standards. First, they will build on "Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem." Second, they will "Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved."
These tools will be paired with literature. Students will be given a problem from the literature and use the STEM tools to solve the problem. They will have to work together collaboratively in order to solve these problems. They will use their social emotional skills and teamwork skills to follow the directions to the completed tasks.
