Help! I am a Science teacher with a background in Biology - not Engineering! My students deserve an expert to engage them in this other branch (and possible career) of Science.
I teach 75 wonderful 7th and 8th grade students in a charter school.
The charter school is located in an economically depressed urban area in Massachusetts. Nearly 80% of my students are minorities who receive free or reduced price lunch. They love our school, they love learning, and I love them!
My students love to perform hands on activities... and our unit about engineering and bridges is the perfect time for kids to get down and dirty. The problem is that I have no experience with building bridges! However, I have done my research and found a wonderful program that will come to my classroom and build bridges with my students. This program, associated with MIT, will send an engineer/scientist to our school to create an interactive workshop for my students. The workshop is described as follows: "Find out what makes buildings and bridges stand up and not fall down. Learn about compression and tension. Become an engineer, design a bridge that can carry a load and test out a prototype!" I just know that my students will enjoy being able to put their learning to use, but we need help obtaining the funds to bring this experience to our school. You can read more about the program online at http://www.ScienceMadeFunNE.net/
In order to build a strong future for our country we need our children to become interested in technology, engineering, and science.
I myself am not an expert when it comes to engineering, so please help my students receive a workshop that will fully engage them in this potential future career!
