My Students

A day in the life of a first grader at our school includes silliness, curious questions, writing stories, practicing using our manners, brilliant ideas, dance parties, listening to our favorite authors, and hard work. They enjoy spending time outside, learning through play, and fostering friendships that will carry them through their educational career at our K-8 school. Hands-on learning and integrating technology into their skill building and projects excites them as learners.

Our energetic group of students enjoys learning using a hands-on approach.

They are movers and shakers and enjoy a variety of work areas, tools, dividers, seating choices, and movable work surfaces. These tools help increase their focus, provides them with movement as they work and helps them feel accomplished and successful.

My Project

In first grade, we are revamping our writing program for the fall. We want students to get excited about being writers. In our classroom we are creating writing centers with supplies that will excite and inspire our young writers to create beautiful books. Inspired by "About The Authors," a professional text by Katie Wood Ray, we are using her teachings to guide our instruction and the set up of our writing center. By providing students with the opportunity to use a variety of materials and make their own books, they will take ownership of the books they are creating. Writing can be a challenging time in first grade for many students. By adding new materials and the freedom to just make books, students will feel like successful authors.

"Teach the writer, not the writing."

What a powerful sentence. When you read that quote, it puts into perspective what our goal is for writing. We are teaching students, not a subject area. In writing, we want students to have extra staplers so they can create their own books, mechanical pencils (no more sharpening!) and post it notes to make mini books. We will be using wireless doorbells to signal to students when they can clean up or switch tasks during writing stations. First grade authors will thrive with these new materials!
