My Students

A large portion of my students are from an English as a Second Language (ESL) population, and are eager to learn new things. More than 75% of our students receive free lunch, and an additional 20% are homeless. Our school teaches bell to bell and has an extended day.

I am a social studies teacher whose curriculum is changing from World History to American History and Civics and am trying to get a head start on creating a collection of nontraditional resources.

My Project

March is a graphic novel based on the life of Congressman John Lewis that is a vivid first hand account of his lifelong struggle for civil and human rights. Rooted in Lewis' personal story, it also reflects on the highs and lows of the broader Civil Rights Movement. Many years ago Lewis and other activists drew inspiration from a 1958 comic book "Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story".

Just as Lewis was inspired by the 1958 comic, I want my students to draw similar inspiration in these challenging time.

This book along with The Constitution: A Graphic Adaption will help fully prepare my students to become the change makers that I know they can be.

A graphic novel uses the art of illustrated storytelling to breath life into stories that might be otherwise inaccessible to my student population, and that is exactly what these books will do.
