Our scholars are a diverse, vivacious bunch. They come from various neighborhoods throughout San Francisco to learn in our small school community. Ninety-nine percent of our scholars are students of color and nearly seventy-five percent of them are English Language Learners. All of them are amazing.
Nearly all of our students come to us reading below grade level, but make huge strides each year- some of them four or five grade levels- through their hard work, dedication, and high standards.
My Project
Most of my students arrive at school every day unprepared due to circumstances beyond their control. They arrive without pencils or paper, without pens or notebooks. We do our best to provide them with the materials they need, but this means they receive a lot of cheap pencils and loose sheets of paper. These cheap materials are hard to keep organized and create habits I hope to break for my students before they head to college.
These good quality notebooks would give my AP Literature students a space to take organized notes like college students.
The post-it dividers will allow us to make different sections for class notes, reading notes, and journaling. The hard-backed covers make them harder for students to destroy them in backpacks, as I intend for our students to carry these around to jot down notes and ideas as they read.
Best of all, the specialness of a new, colorful notebook inspires even the most unpracticed writers. These notebooks will help create an atmosphere of professionalism and high standards that I hope to cultivate in my AP course.
