My Students

Our school is close to two military bases, and many of my kids are the children of deployed military personnel. The school is urban and old.

My students represent the very best in America but many do not have money for food.

My school has a tradition of being a neighborhood school but it is now a school in transition. The stable neighborhood is changing, 18.4% of the families received Supplemental Social Security Income or Public Assistance. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. Ten percent are in bilingual/ bi-cultural programs. We have students from Somalia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Pakistan, as well as Natives from the Alaskan rural areas. Some students are enrolled at our school because it is a school that is close to the regional hospital where their parents are getting treatment.

My Project

Last year when I asked my fourth graders what they needed to become healthy they said they needed to learn how to use left-over milk to make smoothies for themselves and their siblings. They felt that if they could learn to make smoothies, they could teach other kids to make healthy drinks using milk and fruit. On an average, at our school we throw out 100 pints of milk per day because students refuse to drink white milk at breakfast. So my students brainstormed what they would need to make smoothies. They said they needed blenders, protein powder, a mini refrigerator to keep the milk cold and some cookbooks. They also wanted composition books so they could take notes and create their own smoothie cookbooks.

Our school is 100% free breakfast and lunch and often those free meals are the only food my students have so it is important that they consume all the food and milk.

Some of my students take care of younger siblings while a parent is getting treatment or working a second job. My students need to learn how to care for themselves. They need to learn how to make and create low-cost, nutritious, healthy smoothies and snacks.

My students desperately want and need to learn how to care for themselves. The notebooks will enable them to copy recipes. The protein powder, equipment( blenders and min-frig) and cook books from this grant will enable them to learn to make smoothies in the classroom and take the first steps toward eating healthy meals and snacks.
