My Students

The Bridge Builders are part of an urban/suburban community in Whitestone, New York. Our school serves approximately 600 students who come from a plethora of different backgrounds and home environments.

As the students are all engaged in some form of remote learning this year, access to literature at home is crucial to their growth as readers and writers.

This year, my goal is to ensure that all students can participate in remote learning with access to high-quality texts and engaging lessons.

My Project

Books are the plane, and the train and the road. They are the destination and the journey. They are home. Chris Van Allsburg is the author and illustrator of many famous books like "The Polar Express" and "Jumanji." Taking inspiration from children's sense of wonder, Van Allsburg begins a book by asking himself "what if" and "what then."

The resulting characters, images, and storylines are beloved by millions of readers.

Students are drawn into new worlds while reading his books as he creates fascinating storylines. An author study allows students to learn more about Chris Van Allsburg's craft as an author and illustrator. They will be taught multiple comprehension strategies and skills during the read-aloud, often dissecting parts of the text to explore more.

When seeing an author's craft consistently presented throughout multiple texts, students are inspired to develop their own craft as fiction writers and also as readers. They expand their horizon of literature to books in an unfamiliar genre and also focus on the element of illustrations to strengthening storylines.
