Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine having to learn about a topic such as oil spill but the only resources available to you are very complex due to the fact that they are written in a language which you are also trying to learn? My ESL students need leveled non fiction books to help them succeed.

My entire class consists of ESL students who are new to the country and or were born here in the states but are acquiring English as a second language.

All of them regardless of their circumstances are responsible for learning age-appropriate content knowledge that reflects the content learning in the mainstream classrooms. They are often faced with the challenge of having to learn content based curriculum with materials that are not at their independent reading level, therefore making it very difficult to understand. They need to be motivated to learn about Science, and Social Studies by exposing them to wonderful non fiction authentic texts at their own independent reading level. Although our department of education strongly agrees with this, the current budget does not allow us to provide these materials for them.

My Project

These texts will allow them to be challenged while making learning more meaningful and purposeful. English learning will become a means to an end, which can accelerate second language acquisition. They will also be exposed to academic vocabulary, which they critically lack. They will be able to practice all the vocabulary strategies taught during reading workshop, thus allowing them the opportunity to acquire content based vocabulary and achieve academic success.

Your donations will make a big impact in their academic success.

They will be exposed to challenging, yet meaningful resources. They will in turn feel motivated to learn about the content area while learning English as a second language.
