My Students

My fifth-graders are just starting those wonderfully awkward, identity-forming years of being a tween. The range of maturity and development is huge! That being said, there is one thing they all have in common: the potential to become a life-long reader.

As their teacher, I have the opportunity to seize the moment and help them all find reading materials that will keep them reading!

I love the challenge of matching kids with books or other print! Giving the kids time to read is easy; having books that will interest everyone is not. Our school library does not have a budget, so it's up to me to know my kids and do whatever it takes to make reading material available to them.

My Project

Having this project fully funded will mean that I can continue to build a culture of readers. The kids will know that they asked for specific materials and I listened. Having voice and choice is so important!

Having new classroom library books will allow us to have meaningful discussions about what makes us tick as readers.

I will have the chance to inspire my readers to try new genres through our weekly Book Talks. My students have already asked if they can create their own Book Talks and present to other classes. New books will fuel their excitement and create more opportunities for them.
