My Students

"If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that." ~ Stephen King. We need these mentor texts to show students the limitless possibilities there are for enhancing their writing.

This year I have 29 motivated 5th grade learners in a moderately affluent area.

My students genuinely love to listen to mentor texts. They love the humor, descriptive language, and interesting vocabulary good authors include. It will be inspiring to see my students try to incorporate tools they hear in these mentor texts into their own writing. This group of students absorbs all that is presented and works hard to digest it and turn it into their own products.

My Project

If we are granted this request for mentor texts we will be able to study in depth so many skilled writers' crafts. A writer's craft is not something that can be taught, instead it must be modeled and practiced. Through these mentor texts, students will find tools that they can connect with as writers. They will also find authors that they want to read more from. These mentor texts will open up doors for students to find their own styles. I am so excited to inspire students to want to write well. Well-read and written students often have many academic and professional opportunities available to them in the future. This request will build lifelong skills.

This request will not only benefit this year's students, but students for many years to come.

I will build a love of language, reading, and writing that they will take with them when they leave my classroom. My students will find value in being well read and having an awareness of a variety of authors and the various genres.
