My Students

"A room without books is like a body without a soul." ~Cicero. Last year, due to overcrowding, my entire grade level of approximately 200 students was moved to a separate building that does not have its own library.

My sixth graders are eager and enthusiastic!

This is their first year in a middle school and have made a wonderful transition to a four-person team. My teaching partners and I spent hours over the summer talking about how to create a sense of belonging and community for our students. We wanted to create a feeling of consistency and make sure our students knew that reading was valued and expected in all content areas. We have plans to instruct and assess reading (and writing!) in all classes. Moreover, we want all of our students to have access to books they can select for pleasure reading. We have agreed that nightly reading is an expectation and have committed to help our kids find books at their independent reading level that they really want to read.

My Project

Our school has also built a block of time into the day where we can customize the learning of our students. We haven't always had this time where we can encourage and teach students how to choose books that are "just right" for them. It is so important for the students to have access to a wide variety of books that will appeal to them. We want to be able to sit down with kids and make authentic recommendations based on their own personal interests and abilities. We want to be able to talk about books and be able to put books in their hands to look over and try. We want reluctant readers to see others perusing the shelves looking for their next title. When we teach them to be active readers; we want to be able to pull books off the shelves and use current, engaging text as examples. We want our students to see our excitement over reading and for them to know we are invested in their future as readers.

This request will inspire our students to seek out books that will keep them reading and push them to new try new genres.

Having books within arms reach will send the message that reading is a gift. As Walt Disney said, "There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island."
