Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Most of my students come from low-income families, and many of them have not read a book since elementary school. This presents a significant problem for their learning in the classroom, as they are missing out on important vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing skills.

Reading independently can significantly enhance students' learning by fostering critical thinking, expanding vocabulary, and promoting a love for literature.

When students engage in independent reading, they have the freedom to explore topics of interest, which increases their motivation and engagement with the material. This self-directed learning allows them to develop comprehension skills as they analyze and synthesize information from various texts. Moreover, encountering diverse vocabulary in context helps to enrich their language skills, making them more effective communicators. Additionally, independent reading nurtures creativity and imagination, encouraging students to think beyond the classroom and apply their knowledge in real-world situations. Overall, it cultivates a sense of responsibility for their own learning, equipping them with essential skills for academic success and lifelong learning.
