My Students

Do you remember the first time you read a book you couldn't put down? Unfortunately, my students do not have this opportunity. My classroom library is extremely limited and there are a thousand students that visit our school library. Our school library is small and most books are already checked out.

My students are 6th graders.

We are in a public school system and my middle school consists of around 1000 students. I teach on the resource/inclusion team. My students' scores are usually very low. They are hesitant about being different and need motivation to become better students. Reading will give them more self confidence and improve their low reading scores.

My Project

Having a variety of books for students will inspire them to read. They will find something that will interest them. According to the Book Whisperer, "embracing their inner reader starts with students selecting their own books to read. Providing students with the opportunity to choose their own book to read, empowers them and encourages them. It strengthens their self-confidence, rewards their interest and promotes a positive attitude toward reading by valuing the reader and giving him or her a level of control. Readers without power to make their own choices are unmotivated." How can you argue against that???? Those are even more reasons on why I need a variety of novels in my classroom. Studies show that reading everyday in class and at home will also create a life long reader. Students who read at school are more likely to read at home. "I want them to lose and find themselves in books." They will be able to go places that they may never get the chance to in real life.

If you walk into a doctor's office, look around and see who is reading. Most likely it is older adults. In this age, the younger generation has lost that passion to read. I only hope to spark the interest of reading once more in my students. "The man who does not read great books is no better than the man who can't." Mark Twain.
