Inspire Girls to Explore STEM Careers

My Students

The students in our school come each day excited to be at school! They are inquisitive and eager to learn. In my class, I have future scientists, engineers, computer programmers, architects, video game designers, and meteorologists.

Our school is a Title I school Liberty City, Miami.

My classroom is made of 95 % African American and 5% Hispanic. All my students come from low-income households and receive free lunch.

My Project

The laptops will go home on a rotating basis based bi-weekly. Students will utilize the laptops to completed research-based activities on famous African American women in STEM careers. The reason is some of my students still do not have laptops to complete their work/assignments. My after school, girl-power club will use the computers for preparation for Hour of Code December 7-13. Students will also access a variety of internet programs that help them increase their skills in science and math. 

These Chromebooks will be also used in the following websites and programs: MysteryScience, iReady, GoMath, Code.org, Discovery Science, Newsela, and NASA Kids Club. 

This will help motivate the girls and help them remain more engaged. Through their research and reading books such as "Ada Twist", and "Hidden Figures Young Readers', I believe the girls will hopefully be inspired to look deeper into exploring women in STEM careers.
