As the music teacher for the entire school, I teach kindergarten through fourth grade students. The school is in a large, diverse, suburban area and many students receive free and reduced lunch. Each class comes to music for one 45 minute session per week.
We wish it was more but spend every minute of our weekly class making music and having fun!
Our class utilizes several different music education theories, but focuses mainly on theories by John Feierabend and Carl Orff.
My Project
We currently have a small collection of Orff instruments in our classroom- about one for every four students. By adding five new instruments to our class, we could lessen that ratio to 1:2! Being able to work with a partner will provide the student with peer feedback as well as allow all students to play instruments together. This will also save us precious time in music class. Currently, we have to do most activities three or four times to allow all students the opportunity to play. With additional instruments, we could accomplish more in our limited time in music each week.
