My Students

I entered the field of Special Education just over 12 years ago and have been blessed by ALL the students that I have had an opportunity to engage with over those years. Each one of them has a special place in my heart. They are imaginative, creative, have strengths, have weaknesses, have made me laugh, cry, reflect and grow.

STEAM activities have been one of the greatest ways to engage my students and watch them want to learn.

The students I work with have a wide range of disabilities, from mild learning disabilities, to autism (a variety on the spectrum), to attention deficits that affect their access to the curriculum. Each child is an individual, as is their learning style, so it only makes sense to create an environment that allows them to discover their abilities, generate excitement for learning and prepare them to be the best that they can. Anything I can do to increase their accessibility to the curriculum is always my priority.

My Project

I learned about Osmo a couple years ago, before it even went on the market for sale. I pre-ordered a box and eagerly waited for it to arrive. Once it did arrive it became an instant hit with my students. Learning their spelling words had never been so fun!! Collaborating to solve puzzles had students talking to each other in a kind and respectful manner. My older students were even willing to share their knowledge with students from primary grades and were excited to do so.

I realized how valuable using Osmo was in my classroom, when I began to notice a trend of my students' spelling scores increasing week by week.

This technology, that integrates with our iPads, provides a unique learning opportunity for all students in my room. As a classroom of students with special needs, I love how I can customize lessons to accommodate to their own strengths.

Osmo fosters learning in key areas such as: creative problem solving, art, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and common core.

- Coding teaches logic and problem solving skills.

- Tangram fosters spatial relational skills.

- Words teaches spelling and critical thinking skills.

- Newton fosters creative problem solving skills.

- Masterpiece teaches drawing and creative confidence.

The following are some quotes from my students about how much they love playing Osmo:

"I love the Pizza game and being able to learn about money, because I really don't know much about money right now."

"I love Masterpiece because it helps me to draw."

"Coding is an awesome game because I can find treasure with lots of money."

"The Monster game is fun because my drawings come to life."
