Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a diverse group of learners. They are keen observers of the world condition, and have the compassion and motivation to make our world a better place for all. They absolutely love studying different cultures, and I love sharing my own cultural identity. They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. Truly, they are my inspiration!

My Project

Reading is fundamental, and so is our responsibility to expose students to literature that features cultural and racially diverse characters. Children gravitate towards books with topics that are relevant to them. When they actually read about people who are like them, they are more motivated to read and research more. Their curiosity becomes heightened, as they draw parallels between the books they read and their own world. These books will serve as a springboard for developing students' global competency, by raising their awareness of issues around the world, including their own community. I picked picture books, teaching books, and sets of chapter books to read in the classroom that will prepare me to initiate and facilitate meaningful, productive dialogues about race in the classroom.
