it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Don't you love curling up with a good book on a hard metal and plastic classroom chair? Neither do my students. At our school, we do much to promote a love of reading by providing our students time every day to read books of their choice, but they would love a more comfortable locale for reading!
I teach English as a Second Language at a high needs urban high school.
Language development and literacy development are inextricably linked, and it is of great importance that my students are often exposed to text to develop their vocabularies and writing skills. My students and I read together everyday during a dedicated DEAR period, but my students need encouragement to begin to view reading as a fun and relaxing activity.
My Project
We can take for granted how much a peaceful and comfortable environment contributes to our enjoyment of any activity. With a bright, vibrant rug and reading rockers, our reading area will be transformed into a visually appealing and serene spot to cozy up with a good book. My students will begin to see reading not as only a "classroom" activity, taking place at a desk in a school chair, but as an enjoyable personal endeavor.
School environments communicate a lot to students about the nature of activities in the classroom.
Drab, unwelcoming environments can indeed lend an institutional feel that we don't want in our school. Learning is a dynamic and creative venture, and our classrooms should say that to students. Help me show my students the beauty and comfort of reading by giving us a lovely space in which they can daily curl up and learn the joys of reading!
