Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach primary special education in an inner city school in Chicago. I have 20 severe learning disabled students. This year I have students from Kindergarten to fifth grade. Most of my students are at least 3 to 4 levels behind grade level in reading. That means my fifth grade students are currently reading at the first grade level. At times it becomes difficult to motivate these students to read. Children love Dr. euss books. They read them over and over again. There are two ways in which I plan to use these books in my classroom. The first way is to place them in my classroom library for my students to read and take home nightly. The repetition in these stories will help them practice their reading skills, in hopes that they will eventually overcome their learning disability. The second way in which I plan to use these books is through character education. When I first had the idea of teaching with Dr. Seuss I was taking a class this summer. I learned all of the ways that Dr. Seuss can be implemented to build student self-esteem, confidence and character in the classroom. All of these books build on specific character traits. For example they teach accepting differences, peaceful communities and environmentally friendly attitudes. Through Dr. Seuss I hope to instill confidence not only in my student's reading ability, but also in themselves.
