My Students

My students come to me for reading and writing intervention and they face a multitude of challenges in these areas. Although they don't qualify for special education, they have fallen below grade level for various reasons.

My students attend an IB elementary school.

They are pulled out of their homeroom class for reading and writing intervention work. They are incredibly hard workers, but need extra support to move them up to grade level. It would benefit these kids to have resources to support their varied learning styles. These kids are some of the most engaged and focused in the school, trying their best day after day. I want to move beyond the basic scripted intervention curriculum and give them more opportunity to inquire and apply creative thinking during literacy. Even though they struggle in reading, I want to support them to find a lifelong love of books.

My Project

These resources will help me differentiate my teaching so that all student needs are met. I will be able to create literacy centers where students can spend more or less time depending on their area of need. The fluency kit enables students to practice reading poems, songs and stories with proper expression, pacing, and intonation. In addition, the comprehension building activities for fiction and non-fiction passages will provide the practice they need to implement core reading strategies and build on their comprehension skills. These are focused on the power standards they will need to understand various types of text. The non-fiction comprehension folders will be used during instructional guided reading lessons. They include passages loaded with fun facts, bright photos, colorful illustrations, and graphics. These folders are meant to be high-interest to increase non-fiction comprehension. My students will be fascinated!

The impact that these resources will make is beyond words!

Please help provide these kids with passages that guide them to discover new things and think deeper. These kids are burdened with boring, colorless passages that don't provide a bridge to higher level thinking. This broad range of resources in fiction and non-fiction will be incredibly beneficial to them. These resources will help foster a love a reading in each one of my students!
