My Project

Students in Title 1 schools often do not have extensive background knowledge in engineering and marketing. My job as an educator of gifted children is to expose them to as many different opportunities as possible to learn and grow. Each February during Black History Month, we complete a unit on inventions drawing inspiration from Black inventers. Looking to the past to drive the future puts a different perspective on present day circumstances.

Students will choose an invention created in the past and either modify, modernize, or completely change it to solve a problem or meet a need in their modern day community.

After sketching ideas for their inventions on paper, they will create a model prototype. Everyone will bring recyclable items from home to use as the base of their prototypes. We have discovered that duct tape and hot glue works best when building the prototypes with colored tape used to add depth and definition. Clean cardbord, wooden wheels, dowel rods, and styrofoam balls will help add useful dimension to the projects. After their prototypes are complete, each student will use their knowledge of visual art to create an advertisement to sell their product. The advertisements deepen their understanding of persuasive techniques, marketing, and graphic design.
