I teach science to junior high students in a rural district in southwest Mississippi. The majority of my students are from low income households that afford little exposure to life beyond their own rural setting.
I want my students to know that there is more to the world than what they see everyday: in fact, there is more to the world than what they CAN see with their naked eyes! I want to bring this world of "inner space" alive for my kids as we study the biological world around us. Budget restraints in my low-income district prevent me from getting the supplies I need to accomplish this.
What my project needs is a variety of generic prepared slides for viewing under the microscope. Having a classroom set of prepared slides will allow me to show my students the hidden world that only the microscope can reveal. By having the slides sets already prepared, I save the expense of purchasing individual blank slides for each of my 100+ students and don't have to place the student in the embarrassing position of being unable to provide these supplies from their limited family budget. Commercially prepared slides are clear, high-quality, and reusable year after year.
Seeing is believing, and nothing can compare with the wonder visible in a child's eye the first time they actually get to see what a bacterium looks like, or see a real red blood cell like the ones flowing through their veins. This experience is memorable to a child, and brings home the point that there is a world out there that any and all can explore! I strive to instill in my students that their way out of a low-income future is education. Your generous assistance toward attaining that goal will benefit my kids now, and the ones to come in the future. Thank you in advance for your consideration of my project.
