Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Many of my students view mathematics as an insurmountable obstacle. This year, I would like them to see it as a set of tools they'll use to interact with the world as well as better their lives and the lives of others. But to do this, we need some basic materials.

Imagine that you're an at-risk middle school student, with skills far below grade level.

You want--more than anything--to improve, but you're against all odds. You come to school every day without basic materials, such as pencils, paper and folders, and your classroom is ill-equipped as well. I have been lucky enough this year to have an amazing batch of students. While I have only known them for a few days, I can already tell that they are some of the most awe-inspiring and courageous people you'll ever meet. As teens coming of age in the inner city, the vast majority come to school on any given day with a multitude of problems resting on their shoulders. Still, they have shown me how much they truly care about improving their skills so they can work at grade level. To accomplish their goals, though, they need a few things: encouragement, support and motivation... and most of all, basic materials.

My Project

The materials we are requesting are materials needed for the everyday functionality of our classroom. My students need paper and tape to display their hard work, markers for class activities, labels to make our classroom inviting and usable, and toner for printing out final projects. With these materials, my students--who are below grade level and come from impoverished neighborhoods--will have a much higher chance of achievement.

The importance of mathematical reasoning can never be overemphasized.

If we can spark a fire within these students and help them cultivate a passion for math, they will have no limits. A mathematically fluent child is a child who will one day have choices. No student should be faced with closed doors and one-way paths. For a better tomorrow, please help fund our project!
