Help Mr. Douglas

I am a middle school health and physical education teacher (grades 6-8). It is my second year teaching at my school in which various minority groups comprise over 75% of our population with many students on free or reduced lunch. Many of my students have never had an opportunity to participate in activities not typically offered during physical education classes. Many of my students have also indicated that they would be more inclined to participate in varying extracurricular activities if they had at least been introduced to them previously. Since our school offers the opportunity to participate on an after school lacrosse team, I would like to give my students the opportunity to have a basic familiarity with lacrosse in an effort to increase interest and participation in activities outside of class. If provided with the 35 lacrosse stick and 18 whiffle balls a unit (of approx 15 days) covering lacrosse could be implemented utilizing the Sport Education model. Utilizing this model, students take part in a modified "season" whereby they are assigned to enduring teams and take on various revolving roles such as scorekeeper, statistician, referee, coach, reporter, and manager. Through this model students are given the opportunity to participate in the day to day components such as practices and competitions not only as a player, but as other individuals typically involved in athletics. They will also experience the atmosphere and festivities associated with a typical sport season (modified for a physical education class) and the culminating event, such as a non-elimination post season. With your help, inner city students will be introduced to an exciting activity typically limited to more homogeneous communities. Hopefully this experience will also lead to students becoming more confident with respect to other non-traditional activities.
