Hello, I am first year Kindergarten teacher in Chicago. I teach at a school which is the home to students who are refugee, inner-city, and second language learners. Additionally, I have 4 students with special needs. Without a teachers aide. In our classroom, my students are exceeding the expectations that many have for them.

My school is starting over from a corrupt previous administration. Many teachers left the school taking with them school supplies, furniture, books and other essentials. I have despite my current financial situation supplied my classroom with a lot of items, and I have asked my parents for help. However, they can only do so much. Our school is a balanced literacy school, which means we operate most or all of our learning on centers. A large component for centers is a listening center, which we do not have yet.

I have done some research and found that students from all backgrounds who have the basic supplies to be successful do better and perform better on test. A listening center will be the glue for many of students who are English language learners and students will special needs. I will also be able to reach my students who just need to hear how a book is read. The listening center will help all my students. We are looking for a cd and cassette player, the one from Lakeshore Learning Center, will give my class enough headphones so I can maximize the use of the center. We also need book boxes and clear tubs to hold the books on tape.

I heard about this program from another teacher at my school who was in tears at our last staff meeting. Several donors funded her science collection and new library. I couldn't believe that there was a program which brought together so many people who wanted to help watch young students be successful. I am excited to see my two autism students and down syndrome student use our new listening center, I am excited to see the excitement because these students will have the same chance at success as any other kid in Chicago! thank you, I hope that you will understand that I can't do my job with out amazing people like you! :)
