My Students

My two classes of jewelry making are of varied abilities and members of a diverse urban community grades nine through twelve. A large number of students are English Language Learners in addition to typical students. The classes have a significant portion of students with special education needs. The two jewelry classes share all materials.

My students are enthusiastic learners with a great ability to express themselves through their artwork.

I develop lessons that connect my students in some way to assist in learning concepts and skills. The character they show is helping each other, they are quick to help each other, eager to succeed and are hardworking. Visuals and demonstrations are part of the ways I differentiate my lessons for all learners.

Students have learned how to evaluate and critique not only their artwork but classmates artwork. They love to ask questions. Kinesthetic learning supports long term memory, real world application and school attendance.

My Project

Symbolism supports related experiences. Students plan their lesson designs by using a VENN diagram listing ten things describing themselves on the left side of the VENN diagram, On the right side students research a Native American Jewelry artist and in the center choose three Native American symbols that describe themselves from the left side of the VENN diagram, such as success, moving and friendship. Students may also for a challenge create their own personal symbols.

Students then design their Inlay pendant and chain using at least two of the self evaluative symbols to be cut out and filled with crushed stone after soldering a back plate.

Students create a chosen chain design to be made with jewelry pliers to attach to created pendant.

Students are to fill out a self evaluation rubric and peer evaluate other students jewelry pieces. Students will write an expository essay describing their choice of symbols. Students will then fill out a single slide presentation card in GOOGLE Classroom for presentation on the SMART Board to the class. Students will be graded on presentations using a presentation rubric.
