Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day in my visual arts classroom, students enter, engage in the launch exercise related to academic vocabulary and the current project. After some brief discussion and visual displays, the students begin the studio portion of the daily routine.

My students are from an urban setting and they have a highly expressive and creative ability.

They typically have not engaged in the visual arts to a high degree, and have not had the opportunity to work in a variety of materials. By connecting the academic vocabulary instruction with the engaging ink portrait project the students are able to enjoy the creative process while learning the visual arts vocabulary and concepts.

My Project

The students will be able to select any person for their portrait project. Use a variety of ink colors and types, and have an ample length of time to create a higher technical and detailed portrait. They will learn how to mix colors, draw a series of enlargement grids, and complete a long term project.

When living in a low income community in an urban setting, students do not get the same level of visual arts exposure.

Engaging the students in the creative arts allows them to tell their story, express themselves, and portray their idols, peers, and family members.
