My Students

Because I teach AP English Literature, AP English Language, and Honors English IV, I ask students to write, type, and get criticisms for what we read in class. My students print up a lot of papers; I proof and review their college essays. They ask me to help them with scholarship essays, etc. In the heart of one of Miami's inner city areas, my students sometimes lack the funds to print up the required paperwork they need for school - not just my class. Our school is predominantly lower socioeconomic families; yet, they desire the opportunities to soar and make it to college. They fight to stay in my class because they want to better their environs for themselves and their families.

My Project

Because books for AP classes are hard to come by, I need printer ink to provide handouts and PDF documents for students to use in my English classes; I print short stories, news items, poems, practice exams for students to use. Active annotation provide cause unimaginable learning. To see 11th and 12th graders work hard on their own copies is delightful!

Students will learn through active reading strategies!

They will annotate the provided documents, because they will now own them. This ownership causes students to be able to revise and individualize their learning, by looking at my and their annotations throughout the year. Without the toner to print the provided copies, they would not be able to to this.
