This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I know you've been waiting two years to get to make the gingerbread project. As level III students, you are now ready! But, did you know that to complete this project, you must apply architectural math concepts? Don't let that scare you. This is math that you'll be able to see and create with.

My students are amazing multicultural young men and women.

We are a public, high school within a small section of a big city. The majority of my students are Hispanic and come from financially challenged homes. Unfortunately, many of their English, math, and science scores are low. I teach Culinary Arts. It is a three year program and Academy within our school. When the students graduate from my program, they are certified within the food service industry.

My Project

We currently have no way to visually share our ideas and projects before they are actually built. As the teacher, I'll be able to share information as a whole group. My students are extremely visual learners. Math concepts are difficult to teach in a culinary class. By seeing the process, I can walk them through the process. I'm most excited with the idea of the students sharing and giving feedback to each other. It is amazing what creative ideas can come out of group discussions. Without a document camera and projector screen, this can only (and currently) happens in small groups.

It is exciting to teach a subject that uses all the "core" subjects.

For many of my students, the core subject (in this case, math) comes alive in a way they can understand but were unable to grasp in the traditional math classroom.
