My Students

One of my favorite quotes comes from Dr. Seuss, best known for authoring stories like The Cat in The Hat and many others: "Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away!" As a teacher, I am in awe every day with the way my students think, wonder, and respond to situations that arise in their daily lives.

Our school is culturally diverse, and our classroom is filled with differences; yet we have one thing in common, we are a close family.

We value these differences and see the opportunity to learn from all of our backgrounds and experiences. As in the story of "Oh, The Places You'll Go," we have made friendships with others who are on their own adventures. We will continue to connect with those in our school, our community, and globally. On our adventures, true friendships will form, and we will become a closer school family. Literature and Art helps unite us, inspire us, and develop a love for adventures and the new places we'll go.

My Project

I am excited about our "Important People in History" Unit. We will be reading a lot of biographies, and researching people that have influenced and made a difference in our own personal lives or in the lives of others. It is important to help my students connect with the past, and learn about people living today who are choosing to make a difference in the lives of others. During our Social Studies Unit, my 2nd graders will select a person who inspires them to be a better person and to make a positive impact on those around them. After they research and write about their person and the influence they had on others, I want them to create a 3D representation of their person using the art supplies from this Donors Choose project. The art supplies include styrofoam balls, felt, clay, wiggle eye stickers, origami paper, and a crafting kit. They will use their mini "Biography Doll" to tell others about their individual's personal story of struggle, perseverance, and influence on others. This project-based learning will also be a time to showcase my 2nd graders' knowledge about their person, the technology skills they have acquired during this assignment, and their creativity through art as they design a replication of their individual.

As Nelson Mandela said, "We can change the world and make it a better place.

It is in your hands to make a difference." Learning about others who have made a difference, or who are making a difference in the lives of others, will strengthen the values and character traits I am teaching to my 2nd graders. I want them to become people who are kind, giving, and have integrity. This entire project will be a creative way to share our learning and the inspiration we gained from those influential people from the past and the present.
