My Students

If a child cannot be taught in the way we teach, we must teach in the way the child can learn. As a special education teacher, I have taken this quote to heart and am constantly striving to find new ways to reach my unique students.

Our school is home to about 300 students in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood.

Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredibly resilient. The students that learn in my K-2 grade classroom all have low incidence disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, and Down Syndrome. Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning. I truly LOVE my job as their teacher and cannot imagine teaching a different group of children.

My Project

We NEED an iPad! Research states that the touch screen and engaging nature of an iPad is highly effective in teaching children with developmental disabilities. Many of my students do not have the hand eye coordination to use a computer mouse, making our school's desktop computers very frustrating for my students. With an iPad, students will rely on touch screen technology rather than a computer mouse. They can engage with visually stimulating applications that will help them with basic skills like sight word knowledge, number identification, color discrimination, and understanding facial expressions. Working with an iPad is something that my typically very needy students will be able to work with independently. This will allow for so much more individual teacher time for all of my students! The case we are requesting will protect our iPad so that it will be safe in our often chaotic classroom and can be used for years to come.

All students should have equal opportunities to engage with technology at school, and this is an excellent way for my students to get in on the fun.

Please help change the lives of my students by exposing them to technology!
