My Students

The boys and girls soccer teams at our school consist of passionate and dedicated members whose lives have been positively impacted by the sport of soccer. Our students travel from all over the New York City Metropolitan area to attend. Our school is a select STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) school in partnership with Columbia University. School is very important to our students but having other sports, such as soccer, provides other learning opportunities that we don't always get in the classroom (e.g. sportsmanship, optimism, confidence, teamwork, etc.).

Our two teams consist mostly of students of color from low-income backgrounds who have a deep love for soccer and dream beyond anyone's understanding.

These are students who have lots of potentials, and this is a team that needs support to withstand the test of time, as it is part of a 6-12 school where middle school students look up to the team need it to last long enough for them to also join.

My Project

At the beginning of the year, our school suffered from staffing shortages. Unfortunately, both our boys' and girls' soccer team were a casualty and their season got canceled. The students were incredibly heartbroken after already missing a whole year due to COVID. They tirelessly worked to try to recruit a new coach but due to regulations with the league they play in, we were not able to find anyone. This past winter, however, a unique opportunity was brought to us to play soccer indoors in the comfort of our own space! With this program, students can virtually perfect their skills with their new instructor and share what they are doing with their teammates all from their devices. Being able to finally do some soccer would not only help perfect their playing abilities until they are allowed to play on the field again but more importantly would help their mental health and team morale after over a year of not being able to play and then a whole extra semester not even knowing if they would have a team!
