My Students

Over the past 5 years, our school's Green Team has successfully expanded initiatives to educate students about conservation, sustainability, and environmental challenges. We have reduced electrical waste through the installation of occupancy sensors and energy efficient lighting, built and designed a thriving outdoor garden from the ground up, expanded our partnership with The High Line, which is an urban aerial greenway in NYC, and most recently, we're slowly incorporating urban farming education through the integration of hydroponics systems in some of our classrooms.

As a dedicated member of our school's Green Team, my curious and insightful first graders will transform into urban gardeners, scientists, and innovators during the school year by working and maintaining our indoor and outdoor school gardens.

This provides them with valuable hands-on experience and real-world learning.

My Project

The current urban agricultural boom in NYC and worldwide has paved the way for alternative farming methods that are becoming more sustainable and highly innovative. Therefore, it is imperative that my students are learning how to become urban gardeners themselves so they too can innovate and foster meaningful change within their communities. We are currently learning about hydroponics and aquaponics gardening in the classroom, both soil-less methods of growing. However, my goal is to expand their understanding of alternative farming methods by also introducing aeroponics gardening, another soil-less growing method that utilizes air and water soluble nutrients.

To help my students expand their understanding of urban agriculture, my students need a Tower Garden Growing System to learn about aeroponics gardening.

The Tower Garden Growing System is a vertical aeroponics system that allows you to grow indoors. Students will use the system to understand the process of aeroponics gardening, grow produce from seed to plant, and eventually harvest the plants to cook and eat, our version of "class to table." Not only will students gain valuable skills as urban farmers, scientists, and engineers, they will also have a better understanding of food sourcing. This is essential for students living in urban spaces where access to green spaces is limited.

Finally, by having 3 different systems in our classroom space: hydroponics, aquaponics, and aeroponics (with the funding of this project), not only are we expanding our indoor classroom garden, my students will also have the opportunity to compare and contrast all 3 systems. There will be more learning opportunities to collect quantitative and qualitative data. All the elements of STEM education, science, technology, engineering, and math, will be greatly supported with the funding of this project.
